Inspired by a group of Twitter users who dub themselves "The Twitter Fam," this article is for those who have been observing all of the buzz around Twitter, tweeting, those Facebook posts from your friends about how they are chatting it up with their favorite celebrities, and who want a piece of the Twitter action.
Why Sign Up for Twitter?
Don't be left out of all of the fun!
Starting and using a Twitter account is much easier than you may think. With an account, not only will you have the opportunity to make "twiends" (Twitter friends) from all around the world who share your interests, but you'll have the ability to sign "Twititions," which are the Twitter community's version of petitions for causes that they wish to support. You also have the chance to have a direct line of communication with your favorite celebrities. To get started with all of the fun, you'll need your very own Twitter account. Let's go through it, step by step.
Step By Step Easy Directions for Joining Twitter
- To begin with, point your browser to the Twitter website by clicking here. Once there, you'll see a form that says "New to Twitter? Join Today!"
- Fill out this form with your Full Name (as you wish it to appear on your Twitter public profile), email address (you need a unique email address for each Twitter account that you create. Yes, you can have multiple accounts.)
- Finally, create a your password that is easy for you to remember but that would be very difficult for others to guess.
Twitter will send an email to you with a link. Click this link to confirm your email address, and you are up and running! To personalize your Twitter account, go into your profile settings and select a photo to use as your profile picture. Otherwise, you'll show up as a picture of an egg.
Search For Others to Follow
Millions of people have Twitter accounts, and many of them tweet (send messages of 140 characters or less) on a daily basis. You can use Twitter's search function to find users who are talking about a certain subject (i.e. cosmetics, Dancing with The Stars - whatever you may be interested in), and you can also use the search function to find people by name.
Celebrity Tweeting
Gone are the days when celebrities were unreachable, untouchable, and aloof. Contemporary celebs now chat it up with their fans on Twitter. A prime example of this is actress and humanitarian Leah Remini - perhaps best known for her role as Carrie on the long running sitcom "King of Queens." Check out Leah's timeline (go to her Twitter page, and then look at all of her recent tweets), and you will see that she makes an attempt to respond to most of the tweets that her fans send her way.
Support a Cause
There are many great causes that are drafted up as Twititions - petitions for the Twitter world. They advocate for an array of things. In sticking with our mention and example of actress Leah Remini, many of her Twitter fans have started Twititions to advocate for her to host an episode of Saturday Night Live. The goal of a Twitition like this is to garner as many signatures as possible in order to attract the attention of the executives at Saturday Night Live. With your new Twitter account, you can participate and have your voice and vote count!
Now that you know some of the many advantages of tweeting and having your own Twitter account, let us know if you sign up, if you are an avid user already, or, if you count yourself among the Twitter-a-holics.
Happy Tweeting!
